Beyond the Backyard is an adventure race: part scavenger hunt and part double-dog-dare. This family-friendly fundraiser is designed to provide deep belly laughs while supporting housing justice in our community. Proceeds benefit Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity's affordable homeownership and foreclosure prevention programs, making it possible for families to be safely housed and achieve stability. It's $300 per team to participate, for up to 8 people.
Beyond the Backyard is a family-friendly event designed for fun-seekers of all ages and competitors of all abilities. It is perfect for families and/or groups of friends, and offers team-building opportunities for colleagues, sports teams, and youth groups.
On event day teams will race through a variety of challenges centered in Pierce County, responding to clues delivered through the race app and working to solve, find and/or do the things asked of them in whatever order they choose. As teams race, proof of challenge completion (photo/video) is uploaded to race HQ and validated in real time. The first team to finish wins!
There are no communal gathering spots, and no start or finish lines. You race from where you are, and how far you travel from home during the race is entirely up to you.
Your donation not only supports our adventure racers, but opens the door to affordable homeownership for local families and individuals in Pierce County. Safe and stable homes are critical to the health of our communities, and Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity needs your support now more than ever.

Can kids participate?
Absolutely! Kiddos are universally welcome to join the adventure! Please note that kids age 10+ must be registered members of your team. Kids and tots under 10 - even if they're in strollers or wraps - are able to participate, but unless registered won't get a Habitat face mask or a login for the race app.
What if we aren't comfortable with a challenge?
Teams are never forced to do anything they don't want to or can't physically complete. You can skip around to create your own unique combination of experiences throughout the event.
Are there any restrictions?
Nope! As long as your team has 2+ people and raised a minimum of $300, you are good to race. There are, however, some physical challenges requiring balance and/or dexterity – and sometimes both. If you have a teammate with physical limitations, you might want to decide in advance how your team will handle it. Our advice is to have everyone on the same page before race day rather than to struggle in the midst of the competition.
How does the fundraising work?
Beyond the Backyard is a peer-to-peer fundraiser, much like a walk-a-thon or a charitable bike ride or race. The objective is for your team to raise a minimum of $300 to benefit Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity. When you register, your $25 entry fee counts toward your team’s $300 fundraising minimum. But don’t stop there. A prize will be awarded to the individual with the highest fundraising total.
With your registration, you get a personal fundraising page on our software platform with a unique URL to share with your network. You can update your page with your own photos and a statement about yourself.
Should you need to cancel your registration, the fee will be retained
as a fully, tax-deductible donation to Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity.
