Beyond the Backyard is an adventure race: part scavenger hunt and part double-dog-dare. This family-friendly fundraiser is designed to provide deep belly laughs, while supporting housing justice in our community. Proceeds benefit Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity's affordable homeownership and foreclosure prevention programs, making it possible for families to be safely housed during these challenging times.
Beyond the Backyard teams race to complete a series of challenges in the categories of Physical; Find; Skill; and Fun across a three-hour period. This family-friendly event is designed for fun-seekers of all ages and competitors of all abilities. It is perfect for families and/or groups of friends, and offers team-building opportunities for colleagues, sports teams, and youth groups.
Challenges are custom designed to follow our region’s post-pandemic regulations. With your safety in mind, there are no communal gathering spots, and no start or finish lines. You race from where you are, and how far you travel from home during the race is entirely up to you.
Your donation not only supports our adventure racers, but opens the door to affordable homeownership for local families and individuals in Pierce County. Safe and stable homes are critical to the health of our communities, and Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity needs your support now more than ever.

What about COVID-19?
The health of the community is our utmost priority. Challenges are custom-created to align with our state's health regulations. There is no communal starting line and no one location where checkered flags mark the end of the race. There will be no "gathering".
Each team has control over the scope of their race in terms of how "exposed" they are. You decide who's on your team - choosing whether to limit it to your pod or opt to open it up to a wider network of friends and colleagues. You can negotiate pre-event self-isolation and/or testing with your teammates, just to be extra careful.
Can kids participate?
Absolutely! Kiddos are universally welcome to join the adventure! Please note that kids age 10+ must be registered members of your team. Kids and tots under 10 - even if they're in strollers or wraps - are able to participate, but unless registered won't get a Habitat face mask or a login for the race app.
What if we aren't comfortable with a challenge?
Teams are never forced to do anything they don't want to or can't physically complete. You can skip around to create your own unique combination of experiences throughout the event.
Should you need to cancel your registration, the fee will be retained
as a fully, tax-deductible donation to Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity.
