Beyond the Backyard is an adventure race: part scavenger hunt and part double-dog-dare. This family-friendly, COVID-safe fundraiser is designed to inject some fun into your quarantine pod while supporting housing justice in our community. Proceeds benefit Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity's affordable homeownership and foreclosure prevention programs, making it possible for families to be safely housed during these challenging times.
In Beyond the Backyard, teams race to complete 24 challenges in the categories of Physical; Find; Skill; and Fun. This family-friendly event is designed for fun-seekers of all ages and stages, and competitors of all abilities.
Each challenge is custom designed to follow our region’s post-pandemic regulations. With your safety in mind, there are no communal gathering spots, and no start or finish lines. You race from where you are, and how far you travel from home during the race is entirely up to you.
The challenges are custom-created for Beyond the Backyard, in compliance with all local, pandemic regulations.
Your donation not only supports our racers, but opens the door to affordable homeownership for local families and individuals in Pierce County. Safe and stable homes are critical to the health of our communities, and Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity needs your support now more than ever.
What about COVID-19?
The health of the community is our utmost priority. Challenges are created to align with our state's pandemic regulations. There is no communal starting line and no one location where checkered flags mark the end of the race. One of the goals in designing this event is leaving it flexible enough so everyone can participate – no matter their risk factors or reservations about exposure.
Can kids participate?
Absolutely! Kiddos are universally welcome to join the adventure! Please note that kids age 10+ must be registered members of your team. Kids and tots under 10 - even if they're in strollers or wraps - are able to participate, but unless registered won't get an event t-shirt or be able to login to the race app.
What if we aren't comfortable with a challenge?
Teams are never forced to do anything they don't want to or can't physically complete. You can skip around to create your own unique combination of experiences throughout the event.
With gratitude to our production partner:
Should you need to cancel your registration, the fee will be retained
as a fully, tax-deductible donation to Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity.
